About the area

With its more than 20.000 inhabitants Vence is the main town in the Hinterland north of Nice dating to the 11th century, from which especially the town centre "Cité Historique" still enjoys this special atmosphere and Medieval character. Vence is known for its special light and has over hundreds of years attracted many painters and creative souls and still does it. I.e. Henri Matisse lived his last many years in Vence and other famous painters and artist like Marc Chagall, Fernand Leger, Tobiasse, Lindemann often spent their time in Vence.

In a Sub Tropical climate between the Alps to the east and the Esterel mountains to the west, just north of Nice is Vence nestled in 350 m altitude in the characteristic mountain ridge of the "Baous" with the peak Col de Vence in 1.000 m alt above the town centre. Vence is a typical tradesmen's town very much alive all year round. You find some 50 restaurants, among those several with one or two Michelin stars, six different super market stores, numerous hotels from one to five stars, many small local shops, schools, high schools, art university and daily markets where the peasants sell their fresh vegetables, olive oils, meet, cheese and other as well as wines and Brocante, Antiques
